The swift enjoys an open area and farmland makes it easy for them to be spotted . They have a deep fork in their tail and spend most of their lives flying through the air catching insects while in flight, they will never really touch the ground at all. Their lives are truly in the air with them clinging to rock faces and cracks when they need to rest. Their nest is quite uniquely made with it being made on the underside of a palm leaf put together with their own saliva. If they do need to drink they will do it in flight and skim over the water they want. They are superb fliers.

Robert

The Koh Chang Sun - The Real Koh Chang Guide

Scorpions are fairly common on the island although you might never know that, as they are mainly nocturnal and quite shy creatures. In the movies their sting is lethal and they more or less act like predators to humans but the truth is far different. Scorpions are not very interested in messing with humans and although you may see them rest assured that they are far more scared of you than anything. The scorpions of Thailand do not have a very powerful venom, although in other countries and other species there they do. If they do bite it is best to put antiseptic on the cut, and we are told it no more painful than a bee sting. They do have poison but it very mild for a human and the only problem is if you are allergic as you would be to a bee sting. If you are allergic seek medical help right away. But as we said this is a rare condition. Most people just suffer from panic. Scorpions date back over 440 million years and originally had gills instead of lungs. Their main food is small insects although have been known to eat small lizards and such. The females keep their offspring with them for quite a time and under black light the scorpions glow quite brightly. So if you want to see them at night, take a black light and have some fun hunting for them. The picture above was taken from Kanchana Ketkeaw of Thailand who set a world record for living with over 3,000 scorpions in a small room for over a month. She really loves these scorpions a lot! So have fun scorpion hunting on Koh Chang tonight. Black lights can be rented at any bad disco for a nominal fee

Robert

The Koh Chang Sun - The Real Koh Chang Guide

The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is a very common bird found on Koh Chang. They range all over Eurasia and are also now found in North America. In North America they were introduced about 100 years ago and like many introduced species they have pushed out a lot of the native species… in China back in 1970s they were considered a pest and almost exterminated – that was until they found out just how many bugs they can eat in one day. The country was over-run the next year with so many bugs they had to stop the bird eradication program. They are a small bird and their life span is only about two years. Some people in Asia consider them a problem/pest bird but they do eat a staggering amount of insects and seeds. They nest in holes and hatch eggs in under two weeks.

Robert

They are found throughout SE Asia and all over Thailand. Some countries still hunt them as they are said to make good eating… They do not have oil glands like most birds but instead have special feathers that disintegrate and shed a fine powder over the other feathers providing protection like oil.
