Usually when we check out a restaurant we don’t let the owner know we are coming or who we are, but Koh Chang is a small place and we were caught this time. Which was for the best at the end of day! Mak Mak is owned by a really nice Dutch/Thai couple who are both into cooking and so they have decided that each person gets to cook from their respective culture. An excellent idea, as there are no dishes that are called “fusion” as the cook has no idea what to cook! Here at Mak Mak each cook specializes and the results are superb.
Mak Mak is new and as such you can easily see the small touches that have gone into making a restaurant and that is here for the long run. Great plates, excellent silverware, decent matching glasses (trust me sometimes this is a good indication of what is to come), and an excellent layout with half the restaurant roofed and the other half with an open courtyard. A nice touch is that the pizza oven is in a separate building and that keeps the heat out of the main restaurant! Good use of colors, a clean design and no blaring music, just a nice background sound. Comfortable chairs and nice and cool!
The food was excellent (we loved the shrimp tempura! Definitely give that a try!). We had both Thai and western dishes and both we would give both excellent grades! The staff are quick and efficient, The menu is a good balance between Thai dishes and western and there are enough choices for several good nights out. The drink menu had enough cocktails and specials for everyone and we are happy to report that the pizzas are superb! They do not skimp on the cheese nor the meat and are over baked in a real pizza oven.
When we did get caught checking the restaurant out the owner made sure I was taken into the kitchen and showed his pride and joy- the kitchen! White tiles on white paint, neatly organized, everything cleaned with drinking water and everything in it’s place. As he said, It is the closest I can make it to European standard!” and that was really good to see!
Mak Mak would be a good night out for anyone and certainly worth a try on your travels here!
